“I was born in New Jersey.”

Artist bio

Ingrid Nichter is best known for her highly textured mixed media work, where she combines vintage collage elements with acrylic paints and mediums. She grew up the eldest of three children in New Jersey, and was introduced to painting through her grandfather, an oil painter.

Ingrid received her BA in visual arts from SUNY New Paltz. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the Hudson Valley and surrounding regions. She currently lives and works in Kingston, NY, in an old purple house she shares with one human, one cat, and a bunch of spiders.

She would be more fond of the spiders if they would agree to pay rent. Or kick in for pizza once in a while.

Artist statement

I work primarily with acrylic and mixed media on canvas, building up texture and relief through the use of handmade papers, collage elements, and molding paste.

I work intuitively, starting with a rough sketch and adding elements/changing colors as needed. My work focuses on everyday moments—each of my paintings is a bridge to a specific experience: a place, a feeling, a person, a thought, a memory. The paintings are small pieces of what it means to be human, intangible ideas transformed into physical objects. I add metallic accents to highlight texture and create the sense that these moments, these human experiences we all share, are sacred.
